Bronze National Navigation Award - Navigation Basics

This is a practical 2-day course, that gains you a recognised award at the end of the second day. It is aimed at people with no or limited navigational experience, or those with intermediary navigational skills that want a refresher.

Navigation

During the course you will learn how to navigate using paths, tracks and other linear features, how to read a map, the basics of a compass and even understand contours. Most importantly you will gain the knowledge of how to stay as safe as possible on a walk whilst looking after the environment. To see the whole syllabus please visit NNAS, by clicking on this link: National Navigation Bronze Award Scheme.

Whats Not To Hike is an official provider of the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) – this means our accredited NNAS tutors/instructors can provide a recognised qualification in Navigation. If you are successful in achieving the pass criteria of this course (which by the end of day 2, we aim for you all to be at) you will receive an NNAS Bronze Award certificate. The NNAS Bronze award is accredited by the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework ( SCQF) at Level 4, and 2 SCQF credit points are awarded on completion. Please be aware, this is not a leadership qualification.

If you are just interested in the content of this course and do not want the qualification, you can still come on the course, knowing you won’t be assessed. However, please do not worry about the assessment – I like to think of it more as a development of your knowledge and skills.

Silver National Navigation Award - Intermediate Navigation

This is a practical 2-day course, that gains you a recognised award at the end of the second day. It is aimed at people with some navigational experience. You do not need to do have done the Bronze course before this one, if you already have some basic navigation skills. If you are unsure, then please do not hesitate to contact me and we can discuss which one would be better suited to you.

This course gives you the skills required to navigate to features and places away from paths and tracks. It teaches accurate compass work and a deeper understanding of contours. You will learn how to deal with poor visibility and darkness. It will also teach you to select suitable navigational techniques to cross open country. To see the whole syllabus please visit NNAS, by clicking on this link: National Navigation Silver Award Scheme.
